University of Minnesota Morris Assistant Professor of Studio Art Jason Ramey earned a $75,000 award from the Windgate Charitable Foundation to upgrade the campus sculpture studio.

Ramey, who holds a BFA and an MFA in wood/furniture design from the Indiana University Herron School of Art and Design, learned to love woodworking as a student and now is sharing this traditional craft with a new generation of artisans, equipping them with practical skills for furniture design, sculpture, and more.

"Wood is a medium that introduces students to a broad range of techniques, tools, and processes, and students can usually relate to the medium," says Ramey.

The grant-funded upgrades will bring to UMN Morris new industrial-grade woodworking machines and European-style woodworking benches. The new machines will allow students to process raw timbers, so they can source locally harvested rough-sawn lumber for a fraction of the price of prefinished wood—and learn a new skill along the way.

"Both shops I worked in while in school were Windgate funded, and there's no doubt this had a profound impact on my career as a maker," Ramey adds.

The campus has installed a few of the new machines, so students are already benefiting from the upgrades. Ramey plans to have all machines in place by and ready for the fall semester.
