Mark Neuzil Is Morris's Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Liberal Arts

This spring the University of Minnesota, Morris welcomes Mark Neuzil as its Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Liberal Arts. Neuzil tackles issues of the environment, particularly where media is involved.

Neuzil, who teaches communication and journalism at the University of St. Thomas, will teach a two-credit course titled "Communication and the Environment: Analysis and Criticism" in the second half of the semester. He also will deliver two public lectures as well as participate in other campus events including classroom visits and discussions.

The first of Neuzil's lectures, "Canoes: A Natural History of America's Most Important Watercraft," will be held on Wednesday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Edson Auditorium, Student Center. A reception will follow.

Neuzil's second lecture will be held on Tuesday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall, Humanities Fine Arts. Neuzil will discuss "The Big Gulp: A Fresh, Wholesome, and Lowfat Talk on Portion Sizes, Labels, and Communication about Food."

Neuzil is a former reporter and editor for organizations such as the Associated Press and the Star Tribune. He has won several awards for his writing, including the James A Tankard Award for his book The Environment and the Press: From Adventure Writing to Advocacy, which discusses the relationship between the media and its audience through a history of environmental journalism. He also was named 2013 University of St. Thomas Professor of the Year.
